Upcoming Regular Local Election
The local election will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 for the purpose of electing a Mayor and one City Councilor from each Council District.
The City "opted-in" to the Local Election Act in 2018 (Ord. 2018-24) and is no longer responsible for running the election. The election is conducted by Santa Fe County.

Qualification for Candidacy
A candidate for the office of Mayor for a four-year term shall:
- be a registered voter [qualified elector] who resides within the city limits of the city of Santa Fe;
- file with the City Clerk a Nominating Petition containing the valid names, addresses and signatures of at least one-half of one percent of the registered voters [qualified electors] of the city.
Candidates seeking public campaign financing will file their nominating petitions on July 19, 2021 with the City Clerk.
Candidates not seeking public campaign financing will file their nominating petitions on August 24, 2021 with the County Clerk.
A candidate for the office of City Councilor for a four-year term, for any of the four (4) council districts, shall:
- be a registered voter (qualified elector) who resides within the district from which they are running; and
- file with the City Clerk a Nominating Petition containing the valid names, addresses and signatures of at least one-half of one percent of the registered voters [qualified electors] of the district, which the candidate seeks to represent.
Public Campaign Financing
Any candidate for Mayor or City Councilor may qualify as a Participating Candidate eligible to receive payments from the Public Campaign Finance Fund.
Participating Candidates may start collecting the requisite number of five dollar ($5.00) qualifying contributions beginning on May 3, 2021 as follows:
- Mayor Candidates: Six hundred (600) five dollar ($5.00) qualifying contributions from separate city of Santa Fe qualified electors
- City Councilor Candidates: One hundred fifty (150) five dollar ($5.00) qualifying contributions from separate qualified electors registered to vote in the council district in which the candidate is running.

Campaign Finance Statements and Participating Candidate Expenditure Reports shall be filed per §9-2.10 as follows:
(1) By 5:00 p.m. on the fortieth day (Thursday, Sept. 23) preceding an election in which the candidate is seeking election to an office or in connection with which the political committee has received contributions or made expenditures;
(2) By 5:00 p.m. on the twenty-fifth (25th) (Friday, Oct. 8) day preceding such election;
(3) By 5:00 p.m. on the Tuesday preceding (Tuesday, Oct 26) such election;
(4) By 12:00 noon on the Monday preceding such election (Monday, Nov. 1);
(5) Within two (2) weeks following such election; and (Tuesday, Nov 16) 9
(6) As required in subsection 9-2.10B SFCC 1987 below. B.
The candidate or political committee and their respective campaign treasurer or deputy campaign treasurer shall file a final report no later than six (6) months following a municipal election. Upon submitting a final report there shall be no obligation to make any further reports unless there are outstanding debts. If there are, a report shall be filed every six (6) months until all outstanding debts have been liquidated. (May 2, 2022).

Amending Section 9-2.6 (Independently sponsored campaign communications and reporting) to Increase the Aggregate Expenditure Amount Requiring Reporting to Five Hundred Dollars and to Exempt Aggregate Contribution Amounts of Less than Twenty-Five Dollars from Separate Reporting Requirements;
Amending Section 9-2.7 (Statement of political committee organization) to Make Necessary Changes Regarding References to a "Political Committee";
and Amending Section 9-2.11 (Campaign finance statement; contents) to Exempt Aggregate Contribution Amounts of Less than Twenty-Five Dollars from Separate Reporting Requirements.
